Chapter 5: New Species, New Employee
The app sent Duan Jiaze another message on the second day, indicating that the second task had been issued.
Task Description: In order to ensure a smooth opening, please prepare for the basic! Introduce thirty types of animals and recruit three employees, otherwise, how could you satisfy the needs of the tourists?
Task Reward: After the task has been completed, you will receive: Thirty days worth of high-quality feed for all animals, free upgrade of animals’ enclosures and facilities.
As for the Ling Xiao Support at the bottom, there was still no new progress. It seemed that there wouldn’t any animals dispatching any sooner and this Duan Jiaze breathed a sign of relief because one Luya was enough to make him troubled.
But this mission was really difficult for Duan Jiaze. Don’t talk about recruiting employees because he was already doing it, the issue was that the zoo wasn’t big to begin with and there was a shortage of fund but he still had to bring in thirty types of animals? Why did it feel like the difficulty level for task No. 2 had increased!
Duan Jiaze even ran out to count the number of empty enclosures and there was only some left. While he was in a dilemma, he suddenly thought of something. He took out the previous feeding list to check, and sure enough!
The animal species list was very tolerant. While both the peacock and parrot were the same species, they could be counted as an independent type. The number was all written according to Peacock No.1, Peacock No.2, Parrot No.1, Parrot No.2.
While other animals weren’t easy to bring in, but just talking about birds itself, Duan Jiaze could go to the bird market to purchase one of each type and get a total of thirty types to complete the task. Moreover, they did not have a big space requirement hence they wouldn’t occupy much space.
As he said, why would the mission abruptly become so hard. Now that he thought about it, it was still rather easy to complete.
Actions spoke louder than words, so Duan Jiaze took his funds and went to the bird market in the city pleasantly.
Easr Sea City’s bird and flower market was relatively large. Once Duan Jiaze went in, he felt that he would be able to get thirty different types without any issue.
Duan Jiaze didn’t have many criteria, he picked the inexpensive and those that looked healthy (even if the health wasn’t good, go home, feed them some feed and they would be good). This process was swift and he rented a cart in the shop afterward and placed seven to eight cages on it, making it looked like a special purchase.
Although there were plentiful types of bird, the zoo already had some birds. Secondly, they weren’t that expensive either, so after buying close to twenty of them, he suddenly came to a realization… Because he saw those fish sellers.
Actually, buying fish was more convenient than buying birds!
Duan Jiaze was very happy to find a store, picked a dozen species of ornamental fish8. The price was economical and it should be enough. Here, counting the container, the fish and the birds, he spent a total of several thousand dollars settled everything.
The original Cape Zoo kept fish, but the pond had dried up and the fish had gone missing. Moreover, all the fish in the water were normal ordinary goldfish for the tourists to rent nets and scoop them.
Duan Jiaze pondered for a moment and thought that the empty pond was quite ugly, thus, he bought thirty goldfish.
Now that he had purchased fish, Duan Jiaze went to buy a tank. He planned to put the ornamental fish in a tank and the goldfish in the pond. For the time being, he placed all of them in the tank and it looked a little crowded.
Duan Jiaze patted the tank and talked to himself, “Be good, I will relocate your new home once we go back.”
The boss helped Duan Jiaze to move the tank to the cart. As a businessman, why could he remind Duan Jiaze, an outsider, that this way of putting them together was not good. He couldn’t wait for some fish to die so that Duan Jiaze would come back to replenish them.
However, when Duan Jiaze pushed the cart out, he was stopped by an uncle.
“Young man, why do you put all the fish in one tank!” The uncle was holding a filter in his hand and most likely a fish enthusiast. He couldn’t stand looking at Duan Jiaze’s big tank of mess.
Duan Jiaze was clueless. “What’s wrong?”
The uncle said, “There are different sizes of fish here… there are fighting fish, map fish… Oh, you don’t want all these fish? They are going to fight! It wouldn’t be that bad to go back with half of them left.”
“It can’t be, fish fight?” Duan Jiaze carefully observed the fish in his tank. “Uncle, how do I feel that they seem to get along well?”
“Where is the get along well?” Uncle bent over and wanted to point out the disharmony, but after a closer look, he couldn’t help swearing, “… Fuck, they really get along?”
Inside were dozens of fish with dozens of different colors. There’s big and small, fierce and docile, and they were really not fighting, in fact… They looked especially neat. Those of the same breed lined up together. If not, they would just go according to the size, doing things in their own way as if someone had directed them to line up.
This uncle had been raising fish for many years yet he had never seen this kind of situation. He stayed dazed for a long while before dryly saying, “Young man, you are really capable. How did you do this?”
Duan Jiaze was a bit ashamed. “I don’t know. I have been very good at raising fish since young.”
When he was a child, he also raised small goldfish and small turtles which was unlike his classmates who could turn the animals’ belly up within a week. His little goldfish could actually live on for a few years before dying, so he never felt that keeping fish was difficult.
Sometimes he bought live grass crap, even if he wasn’t able to find up a container in time, and placed it inside the goldfish tank, nothing happened.
Uncle was very enthusiastic, “There is such talent? Have you raised guppies? I don’t know what happened to some of my guppies. Nowadays, they don’t like to move and form groups. I have inquired about it with many people but I still couldn’t solve this problem.”
How would Duan Jiaze know about it? He was also very lost when he kept his fish, so he was quick to say he didn’t know about it. The Uncle was very disappointed and watched the “spectacle” in his fish tank for a while more before he bid goodbye.
When Duan Jiaze went back, he hanged the bird cages in the shed and requested the villagers to clear the pond before they started feeding the animals. He then poured some water in and placed the goldfish inside.
The ornamental fish were still in the tank. Duan Jiaze put them on the corridor of the first floor of the small building. The table was moved to the side and it looked like a display.
Luya knew it was time to eat and he came out to see Duan Jiaze moving the fish tank. “What is this?”
Duan Jiaze: “Aquarium..?”
Luya showed an “are you crazy?” expression.
But it didn’t matter and he swiftly shifted his attention. “What kind of meat is it today?”
The meaning of this sentence was that, Dào Jūn wanted to eat now.
At present in the whole zoo, Director Duan was the supervisor for the feeding of all animals and the only Three-legged Golden Crow’s animal keeper. He accepted his fate and held a bucket of lamb chops that magically appeared into the kitchen. He decided to fry lamb chops today.
The tasteless lamb chops sizzled in the hot oil and the color gradually turned into a golden with a slight burnt colour that gave off an enticing scent. He flipped it around and fried the juicy and fat part, making the color turn deeper.
Luya Dà Yé9 stood on the side and supervised his keeper.
Duan Jiaze was frying halfway when the phone rang. It was a stranger’s number.
The call was then connected. “Hello, who are you?”
“Hello, is this Mr. Duan? I saw your recruitment on East Sea Recruitment Website…”
“Hey, hello, yes, I am!” Duan Jiaze was happy, did someone call to apply for a position?
He put down the spatula and ran outside.
Luya stopped in front of to block Duan Jiaze. What would happen to the lamp chops if he went off?
“…” Duan Jiaze bumped onto Luya and couldn’t move forward. He only could continue frying the lamb chops while chatting with the applicant.
The other party was applying for the finance department. Of course, it wasn’t accurate to say it was finance because the job scope also included sales of ticket after the zoo opened…
It sounded like a young girl based on the voice. Duan Jiaze checked with her if she knew about the job scope.
At this time, the lamb chops were done and Luya was on the sidelines staring at Duan Jiaze. Duan Jiaze shoveled the lamb chops with one hand and placed them on the plate which was immediately taken by Luya.
Duan Jiaze and the girl briefly talked and agreed to an interview tomorrow.
If there weren’t any accident, Duan Jiaze, who was in short supply of manpower and needed to complete the task, would let her stay as long as she had no major problems– but he just didn’t know if she was willing to stay.
The next morning, Duan Jiaze got up early and welcomed the first interviewee.
The interviewee was as young as her voice implied. She handed a paper resume to Duan Jiaze and said shyly, “I am Su Shu, you can call me Xiao Su.”
Duan Jiaze looked at the age on her resume, noting that she was only one year younger than him and had just graduated this year. “Hey, are you a Chinese major?”
Xiao Su awkwardly replied, “Yes, but I have an accounting certificate.” That was the only certificate she have.
With the numerous graduates from the Chinese and Finance major together with her average result and the troubling employment’s situation, she had been searching for a job half a month ago just like Duan Jiaze.
Duan Jiaze understood her position and nodded. He sincerely said, “In fact, I think your condition is very good, but I’ll have to know about our current situation here. As for now, I am the only one in charge and we have not recruited any zookeepers, hence the nearby villagers have been acting as temporary feeders. Your work will also get more complicated later on. In addition to accounting and ticket sales, there may be other trivial matters for you to do. Of course, the visitors volume here is not estimated to be particularly large, we will also be hiring more people as we develop…”
As for the salary, it was 4,000 yuan a month, including a meal. In view of Luya and the future dispatched animals, he could not offer accommodation, otherwise, it would be easy to get exposed, but he did provide housing subsidies.
Duan Jiaze introduced Xiao Su to the actual situation and led her to take a look at the zoo.
Although it was still relatively simple, the high quality rations fed to these animals these days made their fur smooth and their skin shiny. They were full of spirits and sounded confident and bright, which brought back some faces for Duan Jiaze.
At this time, Luya had his hands in his pocket as he walked from the front and entered the small building. His highlights… No, his natural golden red hair was particularly eye-catching in the sun. Of course, the most eye-catching thing was still his face that could make everyone turn around.
The existence of Luya was a contrary to the simple environment. Xiao Su seemed to be skeptical about her own vision. “Is that an employee of the zoo?” She then remembered that Duan Jiaze said that there was only one person in charge at the moment and dumbly asked, “…Village feeder?”
Duan Jiaze sweated. “No, no, he is just a outsider.”
At present, the zoo wasn’t opened yet so Luya could still wander around. After the opening, he would be acting as an animal during working hours and might face Xiao Su quite frequently. Duan Jiaze further explained, “He is not an employee. After the zoo’s opening, he will only comes at night to stay.”
Xiao Su was awe struck instantly. “I see, he only comes at night.”
Duan Jiaze: “…”
… He felt that Xiao Su’s tone was weird but he couldn’t put a thought to it.
